Nets and brassicas... question.
« on: July 23, 2011, 06:12 »
I've had the nets on for about a month now and am wondering if they're stifling the growth.  Does anyone think it's a safe time of year now to take them off?  It's the birds I'm worried about more than butterflies as they've eaten loads of cabbage round ours this year.  Also, there's loads of weeds I can't get to and am itching to pull up  >:(

If you have problem with birds, there's no safe time.

They don't stifle brassica growth, in fact they seem to assist mine in providing a bit of shade.

You'll just have to do as I do, bite the bullet, lift the nets and weed. I do mine every couple of weeks and all it needs is a gentle hoe to keep on  top of them, rather than waiting until you have a jungle.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

back after successfully weeding my turnips and broccoli and re netting, blimey that was an early start.  Cabbage and caulis either later today or tomorrow!  Worried about my peas though, a lot of the leaves seem withered and faded, and a lot of the peas look like they're rotting a bit or being eaten.  Nobody's ever warned me about this so it's taken me a bit by surprise!  Still managed to pick a few though and they're lovely and tasty!!
