Chillis - There not hot ???
« on: July 19, 2011, 19:48 »
Hi all,

I might have peaked a little eraly here but i picked a chilli from the bush today.
However, not one incy wincy bit of heat.

The fruit has only been growing for about 2 weeks or so, but the one i picked was about 2.5 inches long.

Is there a problem or am i just too keen and impatient ???

Cheers

ease up on the watering and let them get really ripe...............but some chillies are hotter than others, anyway...so what variety did you plant?

We've picked some green Hot Stuff so far and they are!  We also tried a diddy little Apache from the bush green as we only tried them ripe and red last year. It didn't taste of anything much apart from being as yet unripe. I'm expecting them to get warmer.

it is also affected by the intensity of sunlight - and we ain't had a lot of that lately have we
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

You need to stress them a little too.

Tell them their house is on fire and their children are gone.  No, wait, that's ladybirds not chilis. ::)

I deliberately underwater mine at times so they droop a bit.  Chilies, not ladybirds.

I think they are cayenne hot chillis.

As i say the bush / plant is quite large and is developing quite a few chillis now.

BUT, they aren't hot.

I may as well be eating the leaves man !!!!!!!!

I found the same last year Webby my chillis were not very hot but after I left them they did improve. As others have suggested, Chillis have a defence when they think they might not survive they produce extra Capsicum - the stuff that makes them hot to prevent animals eating them. Cut down watering and let them droop a bit to stress them.

are you growing them in a greenhouse? I've found chillis outside around here don't ripen very well and don't get the heat needed to develop the heat! and the last 2 weeks that you say they have been ripening has been particularly cr@p weather in this region....

Hi again,

There in an plastic type green house - but your right in sayin its been a little CHILLI of late.    - I just couldn't help that.

Right, i'm gonna stop watering for a while then - would you suggest letting the compost / grow bag gow the light brown colour before watering again ??

Thanks everyone - it's really helpful advice.

I would go by the state of the leaves rather than the colour of the soil.

I confess I am no expert, but I have mine at the top of the greenhouse, so they get direct sun and dry out pretty quick between waterings, and usually I only water my chillis every second or third watering for everything else.

Of course the other factor which was discussed here earlier in the year is pot size. We're quite happy with the results obtained from keeping them in what might seem like smallish pots which restrict the roots.
