pointy end or large end down?
« on: July 17, 2011, 20:59 »
I read a pamphlet about keeping hens today and it said that

"...eggs should always be stored pointed end down.  If the other way up the yolk will gradually float up to the narrow end and become attached to the side and rot. "

the pamphlet was published in 1997 so is relatively recent.

I know that my eggs don't hang around long before they are used; however I was wondering of anyone had experienced this and which end down people generally store their eggs.

My OH has instilled in to me that eggs are stored pointy end down to keep the yolks in the middle  Don't know where he got it from, unless he is the expert in chicken keeping and egg storing that he claims to be!

Pointy end down, but can be confusing when you get a very round egg!!

Me to, I've always stored eggs pointy way down but if you look at supermarket eggs they are pointy ends up!

Orchardlady.

I shall check that out next time I am in a supermarket.

My parents kept laying hens back in the 50's and 60' and I must have collected and sorted thousands and thousands of them, and we always without fail put every single one  point side down.  I wonder if they have machines for packing now, and it is easier that way

I think the reason for the pointy end down probably comes from the fact the air sac is at the round end, and if the eggs are to be set you want the airsac to stay there and not be encouraged to wander around.  :)

All the best
Sue

Mine are on an eggskelter at home but when I put them in egg boxes they are pointy end down.  I think that is the way they are stored in supermarkets too if I remember correctly.

Definitely pointy end down!  :D  Again I think it was to keep the yolk in the middle, but interesting theory about it rotting if the other way up!

I agree with Elcie, aren't the supermarket eggs pointy end down too, as when you check for any cracks, they would be harder to pick up if pointy ends are up??

If you'll excuse the intrusion from a non-chicken keeper here, I've checked our supermarket eggs and they are definitely pointy end down.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
