Roof Collapse; Do I re-think run flooring now?
« on: July 17, 2011, 00:51 »
Hi All,

I have my 3 girls in a fixed run with hardwood chips which until today was covered with netting and tarp. After a TORRENTIAL downpour yesterday the whole roof collapsed and has had to be removed!  :( I will be unable to replace it in the near future so should I now use something else as flooring or keep going with the chippings and Stalosan-F regularly as I have been doing?
Thanks in advance :)

You should be ok to carry on as you are now. You may just need to do it more often if it is open - I don't know as I don't operate this system.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

What is under your hardwood chips, soil, slabs, concrete?  If you have soil you can poo pick daily and dig over weekly.  The hens will help you with this.  If you have slabs or concrete you can also poos pick daily and then weekly use a floor scraper to clear dried on poo, then hose and brush the remainder away.

Its mainly soil but there's a slab path under there somewhere!, ooh, and a bit of pea shingle too!

Clear the paving and you can always dig the pea shingle into the soil for extra drainage.  Then simple routine of poo pick etc as described.  Just a different routine from your normal one and the money you save on not buying the wood chippings you can put towards replacing your roof.
