Is it safe to write on eggs (date of lay)?

If so what type of pen/ink should I use?

I use a chinograph pencil if I can't find that   I  use a 2B.

Thanks,

Wasn't sure what to use.  Didn't want to go poisoning people when they are eaten (Only have two and just for eggs and general entertainment of my next door neighbour).

I use pencil to mark eggs but use it to say which breeding pen they have come out of. I always write on the top of the egg, because if you do it around the middle thats exactly where  the chicks chip out and you lose the writing.
