The proper woven heavy duty sheet mulch is porous. It allows rain through but blocks out light and keeps the soil underneath in good condition. When you use solid plastic as a mulch you get rock hard, dehydrated soil underneath. Lino will be slippery as well so if you do use it I would rope it off so it doesn't get walked on. There is always the temptation to walk on areas that are sheet mulched  :)

do you grow raspberry canes though membrane and if so does it cause any problems as i am redoing a raspberry bed next year and if it  cuts down weeding i am all for that but at the same would like the canes to increase a little
I dont really grow the canes through the membrane but have an open strip with the rasberries growing in it and weed fabric everywhere else. They can send up suckers within the strip but the fabric should discourage them from sending them out elswhere. I have carpet on top of the fabric on the bit I walk on to make it a bit harder wearing and the bed is edged with wood with the fabric stapled to it. So far nothing has come through it but I still have to weed the actual strip they are growing in.
I currently have blackcurrents and goosberries with fabric right up to their stems but I plan on cutting a block out to allow me to put stuff down to feed the soil. This is my first year growing fruit.
