i notice i have a pea  plant accidently growing alongside a runner bean, the bean is winding round the pole and the pea has got its tendils round the bean.  the pea is twice the size and way healthier than the peas in the adjacent bed.  i just wondered if they could be sort of planted together, and has anybody done this.  or would they end up stangling each other

the bean is a white lady and the pea is an early onward (i think)

I have (not intentionally) french beans and sugar snaps sharing poles.  ::)  They seem to be getting on fine together.  The issue is likely to be if one goes over significantly before the other and you get a dead plant tangled up with a live one.  My combo will probably finish about together, your onward might be over before your beans.  But a dried pea haulm shouldnt be that much of a problem .....   ;)

No problem at all. They are both probably climbing up a dried bamboo stalk.

hey thanks for your thoughts.  this is my first year on my allotment, so everything is just a learning process.  next year though i will sow a row of bean and peas together and see,  what happens 8). i will also sow them separately, in case it doesnt work out ;).

Whilst the peas didn't "harm" the beans I found when grown together one tends to boss the other. In my case the peas won depriving the beans of light. Peas got up the poles and netting first then spread their leaves and shaded out the beans. The beans grew but are far smaller with fewer flowers than their contemparies growing nearby that were planted at the same time.
