what has happened to my blackcurrant bush.
« on: July 12, 2011, 20:35 »
The leaves are curling up and looking a browny colour.  They are brittle to touch.  The fruit that was not harvested has also shrivelled up on the affected branches.  I cannot post a picture as the file size is too large and I have tried to reduce it but cannot get it small enough.
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

Are they in a pot or soil?

Have you carefully inspected for any pests?

How old are the plants?

Are they in a windy position?

Have you been watering them?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They are the alottment in soil.  I inherited them  with the plot so no idea of age.  I moved them last year so been in situ for 20 months.  I could not see any pests and I ran my finger along the branches no gunk.  It is quite windy on the lottie but some of the inside leaves are damaged as badly.  The leaves end up looking brown.  I have not watered them for a while.  I did water during April's dry spell.

It does sound environmental rather than pest.

It may just be lack of water after a very harsh winter - sometimes things can have delayed reactions.

I would do the thumbnail test on a low part of the main (or a main) stem.  Scrape back a tiny piece of the top layer of bark with a thumb or fingernail.  If it is white or green, the plant is still alive.  If it is brown, the stem is dead.
