« on: July 12, 2011, 09:14 »
Hi, can anyone tell me if its normal for the bark to be peeling on last years growth of my (the wife's really).the new growth looks ok but the peeling seems to be progressing, there are three plants all in containers planted in ericaceous soil and well watered, are they doomed?

Peeling bark is usually the sign of older canes. With blueberries, canes will crop well up to about 5 years and by the 6th year the canes are grayish and peeling and won't bear well anymore so need to be pruned off. But if growth is sparse, you should only half-prune that cane to encourage new growth.

You don't say how old your bushes are so I can only guess that the above is what's happening. Here's more good info:

I wouldn't worry about it then as the variety seems inclined this way. Keep watering the plant regularly, give it a good feed in spring of rotted manure and a bit of some sort of sulfur powder to keep the acidity, and it will fruit in its own time.

I agree with Trillium - nothing unusual in the bark peeling.

I feed mine with ericaceous plant food (sold as feed for rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias).

Mine seem to be doing OK on it - loads of ripe berries on one, more ripening on the other. Yum.  :tongue2:
