drying shallotts
« on: July 11, 2011, 20:16 »
My OH came up with this nifty shallott drying system, basically two ropes twisted together. :D

No doubt all you experienced lot have been doing this for ages, but I wouldn't have thought of it. Hope it helps another newbie!

Have a nasty feeling that pic not uploaded - let's see.....

Good idea. The simplest solutions seem to be the best.

Ever been down Dhobi Gaut in Singapore?  That's how the dhobi wallahs hang out the washing - no clothes pegs to lose.   Cheers,   Tony.

I have grown some for the first time this year. Shouldn't you let the foliage die back like onions before you lift?

We grew them for the first time this year too. The foliage had started to go brown and the bulbs were pushing up out of the ground showing that they had obviously split nicely so we thought it time to lift. A weeks drying out in an airy place, and all 200 odd shallots are ready for plaiting ::) or bagging. :)
