my first ever potatoes

Picked my first ever potatoes yesterday (LC) and had them boiled and in butter with red snapper in spicy breadcrumbs and some home grown baby spinach. Heavenly.

Earlier this year I knew nothing about potatoes so a big thank you to every body

I know that I shouldn't use the soil again for potatoes but is it OK to compost the greenery; the compost will be used for tatties in containers next year?

That first harvest is so special!

I tend not to compost potato greenery but if you are confident that there was no disease, then feel free to do so.

I would advise against using home made compost for spud bags next year. Just in case there were any pathogens in it, and also because it has very few nutrients in it and the spuds won't thrive.

What do you use instead? I grow everything in my home grown compost.

I dont know about the airpots yet. These were LC's planted in old rubble bags before I discovered the airpots. I will have to wait until my vivaldi and mayan gold are ready before I can report back. They are looking good though

Yes they tasted wonderful. For a starter we had picked some of my carrots and used them to dip into home made houmous. So sweet.

The home grown spinach has been a completely different foodstuff from the stuff that you buy!

I have now cut all my spinach (using the technique on u-tube). They suggest leaving it to regrow and harvesting again but I am not sure

Would I be better to clear the area and sew some more?

I have successfully kept spinach going by regular cutting of the outside leaves for 6 months. It does need to be kept well watered otherwise it has a tendency to go to seed.
