harvesting onion early help
« on: July 08, 2011, 21:52 »
If I were to dig up my onions and shallots before the foilage has died back would they still store? I'm moving house and would not like to lose my crops. Help!!

They won't store well unless properly dried out.  I guess you could either lift them as late as possible and dry them out, or lift them and then chop / freeze.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for the reply. I can dry them out at the new house in a polytunnel up there, or freeze, so I'll dig them up as well the other stuff I want and hand the keys back.

Nothing ventured and all that!

I'm not sure how long they will store once dried, given they were harvested early.  I'd probably hedge my bets and do some in each method.
