Idea's on colouring and markings.
« on: July 08, 2011, 09:11 »
My buff orpington egg was the first to hatch two weeks ago. It's feathering has been more advanced than the other chicks. The more feathers it gets it looks less like a buff orpington. I do think it looks like an orpington chick but what sort is it? Can anyone tell me what colour type it might me? Whatever it is, I think it's beautiful and will be keeping it, if it's a girl!  :)

Certainly not like any buff I have seen.

Could be Crele, Partridge, Jubilee or even a Cuckoo?

There are some good pictures of these colours on the web.

I have 3 jubilee orps of the same age so have narrowed that out as they have a much darker feathering.
After googleing your suggestions it could be a crele or cuckoo? Not sure though.

Partridge would be my first guess (and a boy to boot ;) )

Casey, what is it that makes you say it could be a boy? I have 5 orps to sex and also 4 brahmas. I didn't know they could be sexed so young, I was just going to wait until they got bigger.  ::)  Are there any tell tale signs I should be looking for?

I was just about to ask the same question I have 8 to sex!!! I have already swaped 3 that were without doubt cockerels looking at their combs & wattle at 9 weeks, but the 3 remaining 9 weekers and the 5 younger ones are all still under scrutiny.

Haha, well without having any owther to compare it to I would ring it as a boy going by his very sturdy legs, and keep an eye on it.

I'm not half so confident with my own chicks lol!  I decide they are boys one day, then convince myself they are girls, back and forth until it is obvious hehe!

Yes that's a good point, one of the ones we swapped, we knew from 2 weeks old he was a boy, his legs were very thick and he was alot taller than the other, and he had a comb!!

I have two others that were the same hatch as him (now 9 weeks old) that I am desperately hoping are girls, but I am not holding my breath, they have quite thick legs, and a small comb & wattle , but I am not giving up hope yet  :tongue2:
