A compost heap ideally needs to be kept well mixed and evenly moist - uncovered it can get either too wet or too dry; covered up it can obviously get too dry but at least you can water it!

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

OK I won't...

But there's a serious issue here, does it do better wet or dry?

Our bin has loads of bags of stable manure, and while I never sit here, worrying too much, I do like to consider how all that effort in bringing the stuff home, will work for Mrs Growster and me.

I reckon that the 'organisms'  which are present in the muck, just degrade the stable manure, which eventually gets to the stage (after - a long time - maybe 9 months - and become usable to spread.

'Black gold' is the ultimate goal so it seems, and I don't mind waiting to see what our lot looks, and feels like...

But I still don't know how I'll get it spread around - that's for the autumn planning...

There isn't a right or wrong answer.  It will rot down whether covered or uncovered.  Think of those heaps of manure in stable yards - they rot down eventually.

As JayG said earlier, for composting to work, you need heat and the right amount of moisture.  Too wet and it will be too cold.  Too dry and it will stop until there's enough moisture.

You can probably regulate this best with a cover so long as you keep an eye on what's going on underneath the cover.
