Green Potatoes
« on: July 05, 2011, 14:38 »
I thought I'd check on my 2nd earlies on Sunday and I found that a few had a green tinge to their skin. Is this common? What causes the green?
It can't rain all the time.

Sunlight.

Insufficient hilling up or mulching.

Don't eat them, they're toxic.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yep as DD rightly says they will give you belly ache and maybe some sickness too.  :tongue2: So don't eat them.

If a potato is partially green, just cut off that part and the rest is fine to eat. I`m living testament to that. ;)

Pots are in the same family as Deadly Nightshade aren't they....just in case you were wondering about why green ones may be toxic

They are, Brewers.  As are peppers, chillis, tomatoes and tobacco to name a few. )

On the other hand - I remember frequently getting green chips and green roasties in school dinners.  We ate them (sit up, eat up and shut up! was the dining room mantra) and lived ..... So dont worry too much if your digestion is robust and the odd green patch gets through.  You wont turn your toes up!

And I understand that if you are a cow or a rabbit, you can eat Deadly Nightshade foliage to no apparent ill effect. Reading that made me nervous for our potatoes as they are in a part of the garden where we've had frequent rabbit visitors recently - as they get really brave and just come in under the gate..

Thanks for all the responses! I had only uncovered the one at this point as I was checking how they were coming along, lets hope the rest are ok!

If there is not too much green, it goes away if you keep the potato in deep darkness for a week or two  :D

i went to harvest mine last night after not being able to get to the plot for a week and the plants had died off a bit as they should have been picked a while back. Anyway quite a few were green and i think whats happened the heavy rain of last week has washed some of the soil away as they were well earthed up (i think) anyway ive put them in a drawer in the shed in the hope the green will go away and make them edible cos they are lovely sized spuds  and apart from the green its possible the best crop ive had that ive planted in the ground and not in pots.
