weevils in the feed bin
« on: July 03, 2011, 16:26 »
Hello all

I just found a whole lot of black weevils in my feed bin . I'm itching just thinking about it!

I was wondering if the layers pellets would still be OK to feed to the hens or should I get rid of the whole lot and start again?

Probably from a hygiene point of view, bin them.  Can't help thinking the hens would just view little black weevils as an added bonus though  ;)

Think you can add diametreous earth to it to prevent getting infestations.  Too late now but might be handy to know for future purchases as it would save on wastage and is no harm to the hens.

Thanks folks  :)  This forum is great!  It looks like I will be emptying the feed bins, cleaning them out and refilling them tomorrow  ::)
I like the idea of adding DE to the feed as a prevention ,ANHBUC.

I read about it on the diatomx website -

"Diatom for Pests

Diatomaceous Earth is a natural insecticide that has been used since well before 1900 to fend off all sorts of insects from grain/flour."

Here's an interesting article from McGill University in Quebec on just this subject:

Or if you want to get really serious  you could read the Proceedings of the Eighth International Working Conference of Stored-Products Protection, York, UK, July 2002.  ???
