Potato blight question
« on: July 03, 2011, 09:38 »
I think my pots have got blight - black spots on leaves etc it has been very hot wet and humid down here for a while (Hampshire) I've cut the tops off.

How long do I need to wait to harvest them?

How will I know if I've managed to save them?

Also my tomatoes how do I protect them from blight?

Thank you

Have a look at this thread first - all you need to know about blight!

http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=56717.0

Just because you have spots, it does not mean blight, there are many causes of spots, including old age.

You'll see from the map that the nearest recorded outbreak is in Scotland. You may have acted a little hastily.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I was at Sparsholt Agricultural College yesterday for an open day and asked 'what are those marks on your potato leaves'. They blithely said 'oh that's blight'. So I fear that while there may be no recorded outbreaks yet, it looks as if there is definitely blight in Hampshire.

If it's any consolation, they didn't actually seem too bothered about it. The feeling was that if you're going to eat your potatoes as you dig them, then it won't matter as long as they had enough of a growing season before the blight took hold.

You do want to keep it away from your tomatoes though, if anyone can tell me how I shall be eternally grateful - I've lost tomatoes to blight every year since I moved to Hampshire, never had any problems when I lived in Hertfordshire.

Last time I grew tomatoes I lost them to blight too - my step mum reckoned you could save them by cutting of infected leaves?? but ours had reached stems!!! ???? but yes any tips about that would be great.....  :)
