Urgent help with chick (for a friend)
« on: July 02, 2011, 20:57 »
Copying this question for a friend who needs urgent help please!

"hatching some chicks with a broody. when i checked this evening found one hatched and alive and well but a poor chick had hatched near the edge of nest and had got so cold I thought it was dead. picked it up to remove it and found it alive, barely.
have now sat holding it to keep it warm and its picked up and started moving and cheaping. It even did a massive (for its size) poo in my cleavage.
what do i do now to help it now please? do i put it back with the hen? please help if you can"

Sounds like your freind got to it just in time. Just pop it back under the broody and she'll do the rest and make sure it's nice and snug.

I agree with Madclucker here.
I had a chick hatch late when mother hen was out with the other chick.  I put it under my teeshirt and then in a box under the hot water heater in the hot cupboard to keep it warm.  That night I put it back under the broody not really expecting it to survive.  Next morning it was a little wobbly but a cheeping ball of yellow fluff and got stronger as the day went on.  It hasn't looked back since.  Just shows how resilient chicks can be.  :)
Good luck to your friend and keep us posted.
