Looking after mum?
« on: July 01, 2011, 10:58 »
Hello everyone  8)

My chicks are now 4 weeks old and I just wondered when mum is likely to start laying again and should I start giving her layers pellets in preparation or wait until she starts laying?  Also, how do i stop the chicks eating them??

Piccy of my two new babies that hatched yesterday  :)

my mums eat what the chicks eat, at six weeks I start to change them over onto growers/rearers and then at 16/17 weeks start to change them onto layers. Mum will take herself back to her own coop when the chicks are about 6 weeks(ish) and will start to eat her own food. Usually they start laying again around the 8 week mark but some will do it sooner whilst others can go into a moult and start laying later.
Cute chicks by the way  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joyfull, mum can't escape at the moment as they're separated from the others but hopefully she will let me know when she's had enough of them   Do the chicks need to be roosting by the time she leaves them as they are still snuggling up under mum?

Unfortunately it was just the two chicks (one was dead in the shell again  :(), but at least it was better than my first attempt when I got nothing  :)  Mum keeps venturing out today but they aren't brave enough to follow yet, they are soooo cute  :)
