Brocolli Question
« on: June 30, 2011, 20:45 »
This is my first year on the allotment and am giving brocolli a go (although I think it is probabally more like calabrease).  I have masses and masses of leaves and no sign of any florets.  Is this normal?
I have a pair of secateurs and I'm not afraid to use them!!

No, it isn't. One of the fastest growing bigger brassica. A number of things can cause failure to flower. Overfed, for example? Any history could help, instead of guessing wild.

Hang on... it depends what variety it is

Any Purple Sprouting Broccoli apart from a summer variety (and most are not) woill be no where near flower stalks yet. Thye come sometime between late autumn and late winter , again depending on variety.

I am growing Autumn Spear calabrese -- the name speaks for itself

They are fairly greedy plants, so give them a feed and make sure the ground is well trodden down around the plants, as they do like to feel secure  ;)

All sounds well tbh

Not sure what variety it is, my mum gave me the seeds she bought as a package, including compost and pots.  The pack just said Brocolli on it!!  Perhaps I will just have to be patient and see!

Then it probably will be sprouting broccoli, for autumn/spring cropping.

The summer cropping ones are usually labelled by seed companies as Calabrese.

Too right KC!

Don't worry Always! We did the same, and the broccoli plants turned out just fine, except for the dreaded cabbage white, but I zapped them yesterday...

Had to, it's either them or us.
