« on: June 30, 2011, 09:10 »
I know I asked this question last year. But just wondering how do you cope with them for cooking/freezing.
yesterday I was shelling and couldnt watch tv and do the shelling blindly. had to do it one by one.
how it is done on mass produce?
I know some will use chemicals.. but organicallllllyyyy???? :)

pea moth wrigglies in the peas :(
Shelling and looking at what you're shelling works

Cover peas with fine netting to keep moth out, or only sow very early so they are finished before the moth strikes.

They don't usually hide they're very evident!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Can I ask - what size netting Mumofstig?
I'm assuming these moths are quite small. So does it have to be enviromesh?

Thanks

Sue

enviromesh, fleece, old plain (unholey/voile type) net curtains...........I think debris netting is ok as well but perhaps DD will confirm that one.

ATM I have enviromesh on one side of my tall peas and old net curtains on the other  but they'll be running out of room soon  ::)

A pea moth has a wing span of 12mm - 16mm, so debris netting will do the trick, although it's much heavier to support.

but you'd need holes of a lot less than 12mm, otherwise they'll fold their wings and walk through holes  :(

I doubt they could fold them down to debris netting size!

That wasn't what I meant at all  ::)

I just thought that someone might see 12mm and think  ::) .........that any old netting would do the job............when it wouldn't.

Switch the telly off - you'll shell the peas much faster!

What's really puzzling me is how you get peas home from the plot in the first place.  :tongue2:
