What is living in my lawn?
« on: June 29, 2011, 20:39 »
I have just found a very neat deep hole the size of a 50p piece in my lawn. I explored it with a finger and there is definitely a wee cavern; not sure whether there are any tunnels. Looks too small for a mole and no mole hill. Has any one any ideas?

Probably a mouse, or weasel holes are ridiculously small too.

Its a very neat mouse. The hole is a perfect circle. Will it be living in there or has is just raised a family?

Just discovered that we also have a resident frog. My husband has named it Harry cos if You kiss it it may turn into a prince

Mouse or vole. Probably living thereabouts maybe in disused mole tunnels. Have a read of THIS to see if it gives you any suggestions you like.

Was a tree or shrub in that position in the past ?
When the stump and roots rot out it can leave cavities which can open up after rain.
We had one appear 20 years after the dead tree was removed.

Hate to say it, but could be rats - they can get through tiny spaces, and they make very neat, round holes.

I can join you in your mystification Grubbypaws!

Just found what is probably a slightly larger hole in my lawn; it seems to go down about a couple of inches before a bend and then seems to travel horizontally (impossible to tell how far because even an orangutan's fingers aren't that long, and I'm also not that brave either!)

Strange thing is there are no signs of any excavated soil, although the "tunnel" possibly travels under the hedge and another opening might be in next-door's garden.

Never seen anything like it before.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

That was what I found curious too JayG, no signs of excavated soil; the hole just appeared overnight and it is extremely neat.

No 8doubles there has never been a tree or shrub there.

Rats, ugh, I hope not but it is quite near our composting area.

But if you should notice anything buzzing around there, watch out :)

We've also had wasp nests in our lawn, which are also a nice neat round hole.

Nothing buzzing around and no clothes line at least since 1994.

Yesterday I stuck a hosepipe down it full blast. I failed to fill up the hole, the water just disappeared, and nothing emerged. The hole seems to go all the way down to a ceramic land drain.

While I was doing this a family of goldcrests flew into the pine tree, gosh the babies were so cute

OK, so the past 2 evenings I have stuck a ping pong ball in the hole. In the morning the ping pong ball is feet away from the hole
