hi i want to hatch some chickens prob orpingtons and keep them in an enclosed area of about 100 by 30 foot, they will live in a shed and be released to run free in the day. the area is fenced in the only building in there is a small brick ex bt repeater station about 14x8. will try to post some pics later

A shed can be adapted to keep hens but needs to be draught free and needs somewhere for the hens to perch and somewhere for them to lay.  A shed is difficult to keep warm (the hens will huddle together for warmth but a shed is a big space to fill.  If you are hatching you will need heat lamps to keep the chicks warm so an electric supply is essential (also think what you are going to do with the 50% that may be cockerels.  the size of area you have for free ranging is good, how will you fox proof it?

Good luck with your ambitions!
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

cheers

ok heres some pics, the area is surrounded by a double layer of 6 foot high wire fence with barbed wire on the top its like a prison and there is the small brick building that has electricity so powers no problem. its not impossible for a fox to get in but it would be verrrry hard lol think i will buy chicks or point of lay.

you need at least two square metres per hen, remember to take away any space they cant use (ie where their feeders and water containers are, so I would say approximately six in this size (but check my figures I did it in my head as I dont have a calculator with me!)
