Growing Celery
« on: June 24, 2011, 14:21 »
Hi all

I've have been rushing to try to get a bit of everything on the allotment as this is my first year, my garden centre had reduced celery plants, which I will plant tomorrow morning, any advice on them, they come with no label or instructions!

I expect they will be the sort that has green stems.

Plant them out in good rich soil (celery was originally a bog land plant) about ten inches apart and keep them well watered and weeded.

(That's how far I've got with mine... first time I've grown them too   and they are doing OK)

I understand you can tie them up to make a more traditional celery plant shape, and no doubt some will explain this to both of us soon  ;) )

Dig a trench (flat bottomed), plant them in it and as they grow wrap in strong brown paper and earth up with the soil as they grow.   :D EASY PEASY.  :D   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

So how do you gather up the stems that are already spreading out, without snapping them?

With the help of a chum, or your knees and a length of soft twine!    Cheers,   Tony.

Someone on our allotment put plastic bottles with both end cut off over hers and with straw packed around the stalk. Seems to be working well.

Tht sounds a brilliant idea.  I use the paper method at the moment, and earth up around it.

Oh, and if you are not organic, a regular supply of slug pellets.  If one gets inside it will ruin the crop.

There are two types of celery. Trench celery that you plant in a trench and earth up, and self blanching celery that you plant on the flat. It is important that you know which you have. If you have no idea then I would presume plants from a garden centre are self blanching. Planting out this late you will be pushing it to get a decent crop. Self blanching will stand no frost and need to be used by early October.

Plant self blanching celery on the flat at about 10 inches apart each way in a block. Feed well with nitrogen and keep well watered. Each will aid the blanching of its neighbours. You will need to strip quite a lot of leaves off when you cut it to get to the nice tender heart leaves. Use the outside leaves for cooking.

I'm getting some seeds in the wilkos sale, I assume its too late to plant now from seed? If so at least got good advice for next year
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength
