Planting Baby Potatoes for Winter
« on: June 24, 2011, 14:00 »
Hi All

Just had my first harvest from one of my Mayan Gold bags.. wow about 40 potatoes of good size off two seed potatoes; im well impressed and they have all been eaten already lol.

Anyway, I was going to take 3 or 4 of the small ones and replant them and see if they will grow for winter.

Will I need to chit them or can I just replant them in the same compost bag or maybe even new compost?

Will post pic soon :)

Mattie

Potatoes need a dormancy period of about 60 days before re-planting.

There are all sorts of problems inherent in growing for winter - most do it for Christmas - such as blight, frosts etc..

If you can do it, the best bet is to grow in tubs and move them into  the greehouse when frosts are due.

Do not expect such crops as earlier in the year and I will stress that a lot have tried it with very mixed results.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sure DD is correct but I'd make sure they produced chits before planting them.
Best if you could get hold of some of this years seed potatos.

That information came from a supplier of seed spuds, who is a forum member.

You'll have a job sourcing early season seed spuds now and you'll pay an arm and a leg for the late ones.

Another year, your best bet is to save some of your first diggings of your early seed spuds.

Mayan Gold as pointed out are maincrop and are slower growing.

We grew carlingfords last year and kept some back in the fridge until August.

Got a very modest crop in a bag which we moved into the frost free green house at the end of October.

We tried Kestrel in a large barrel last year with the aim of having some home grown potatoes for Mr. B's birthday in October.  We got a reasonable and tasty crop but had to pick early as the dreaded blight struck and ended up losing a few.   Don't think we'll try again.

It's a lot of bother to go to in an attempt to get a few "new" spuds at the wrong time of year.

I'm quite happy with only having baked, roast, chips, mashed, wedges, duchess, Lyonaisse...............

keep a few potatoes from your first early crop and put them in a biscuit tin of damp sand. Put the lid on and bury the tin at the end of the veg plot, marking the spot with a cane. You can unearth the tin on Christmas morning and, with any luck, you'll have a few 'new potatoes' as part of your festive fare.'

Beechgrove did them that way a few seasons ago. :) Got just enough for a particular dinner in December, if I remember. ::)

I had never heard the term 'furtle' before I found this site - but I have had a furtle several times in the last few weeks with my new potatoes and will continue to do so

Mayans are main crop but I started mine really early indoors and its been relly sunny up here, about mid feb.

Grew them individually in pots and then transferred them to the bags when they were a good size about 9" tall. It worked extremely well, would recommend it to anyone :)

The other 3 bags I have are still going stong so im looking forward to some even bigger spuds there :)

I thiink ill leave the re-planting for now and just concentrate on keeping this summers harvest fed and watered.

Thanks everyone :)

Where is "up here", please Mattie?
