Growing gaffs?
« on: June 23, 2011, 08:10 »
The other day I was snipping off some lower leaves on my cukes which have powdery mildew - I accidently snipped through a really vigorous plant too!!!!!! :( >:(

It's easily done in my opinion.

Have you committed any growing gaffs??

Soooo maddening isn't it. I am short sighted and if I've not got my specs on I'm a real danger to my plants  :nowink:

My husband scythed through my newly potted up tomato plants with the lawnmower cable

Last year I made holes for my leeks, only to discover a tray of leeks on the table when I got home. I'd actually planted spring onions. I had to go back and disinter them (when no-one was looking)  8)

I like this one  :D :D :D
Wife planted some sweetpeas I had started at home and then put an extra seed in between each plant, seeds from a free packet received from a friend.
Packet contained both sweetpeas and sunflowers.
I went to plant some sunflowers later and there was only sweetpeas left.
We now have sweetpeas intermixed with sunflowers. :D :D :D
Starting a new trend.

While pruning the autumn raspberries down to the ground in the winter I forgot to stop when I got to the summer ones.

I have the tantalising taste of a single cane's worth of summer raspberries to remind me of my mistake.  :(

I had around 6 nice healthy tom plants in pots almost ready to pot onto their final large pots. I turned round knocking one off a shelf in the greenhouse which fell onto others below snapping the one that fell and two of those below as well as scattering compost everywhere. Luckily I had a few spares.

This is not really a gaff and I have told this tale before but may amuse.Working away, little time, Easter weekend was good and I got rows and rows of short sowing of seeds for brassica plants, leeks to plant out, herbs, salad stuff etc plus some for flowers etc. In all about 35 identical rows parallel to each other and near path. Back to work, short week home again Friday. Little daughter just nicely walking took me to nearest cold frame to show me she had been playing at postman pushing things through a crack in the lid. Inside lay 35 white labels. Gaff - not to have a back up sketch.

I sowed 3 rows of seeds in seed bed rocket marigold and something else! ( didn't write them  on my plot planting record) when the marigolds! came up i thought oh good i will put a row across the front of lotty, they will look nice.  A few days later my husband said "are you sure they are flowers they look like the rocket to me" So i have flowering rocket at front of lotty!!!!!!!!!!!!  lesson learnt write everything down.
The marigolds look nice too now planted in between the rocket.

I sowed 3 rows of seeds in seed bed rocket marigold and something else!

Used those deep-root trainer propagator trays to get some marigold, aubergine and some other plants going. Wrote on the top in indelible ink what was planted in each row. Problem with this system is that - since each row can be removed individually, the remaining rows can get jumbled up.

Anyway, to cut a long story short...

We now have sacrificial aubergines outside with the brassicas - struggling in our inclement weather, whereas the marigolds have been given lots of TLC in the greenhouse.

Note, this is our first year, so I can excuse our mishap. It wasn't until my wife noticed marigolds for sale in the supermarkets that we realised what happened.

Carefully tended a row of what I thought were carrots, only to discover they were seedling plantain weeds  :tongue2: :tongue2:

It was about 20 years ago and I've never forgotten it
