how long can I leave my 'taters?
« on: June 22, 2011, 21:44 »
First time tater grower and we put in 'wilja' on the advice of one of the site old boys back in march...(good choice, :tongue2:).....I dug the first last week, they were hens egg size, however dug another couple of plants tonight and they are well on the way to baking potato size .......Given that it's going to take quite a few weeks to munch through the entire row should I leave them in the ground..(and risk them getting huge!)....or dig them all now and store??.
As a tater newbie any help not to waste my crop much appreciated :)

Immature spuds will not store well.

I'd dig a few to keep you for a week or so, the rest I'd let grow & enjoy the baked spuds.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grew Wiljas last year and the year before.
Leave them in to fully mature. They are a great great spud but need time to mature in the ground.

Leave them be until they have been in the ground for at the very least 16 weeks.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I have got some king edwards and morford.  One variety has flowered with white flowers and one is just starting with purple ones.  Which variety is which and when to I pick them

Sorry to butt in!! I have grown three rows of new potatos. Am digging up as needed, but obviously, thats a lot of tatas!! Will they just keep growing like maincrop would or do i have to get them out in a certain time??

Do they store like maincrop also??
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

The Potato Council Database tells me that K.E. have violet red flowers, so that' s no doubt your purple ones

http://varieties.potato.org.uk/display_description.php?variety_name=King%20Edward

They are a maincrop variety, so you leave then in for as long as takes, i.e. until the foliage starts to die down.

I've never heard of Morford & neither have the Potato Council.

They will keep growing, and store, but generally for not as long as maincrop as they want to get off to an early start!

All depends on the length of the rows and the appetites of the slugs!

I've harvested Charlotte in the following spring with remarkable success ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
