Sunflowers are good but you might be a bit late now. You could grow lettuce or rocket and let some go to seed.
Do you have an area in the garden where you could let thistles go to seed - the finches really enjoy those.
Hawthorne and cotoneaster are good for providing berries for birds.
I am sure other people will have other ideas.

Lettuce and rocket sounds good,  cotoneaster and hawthorne might take up more room than i have to spare at the moment. Cheers for that.

If you have bee balm, leave the seed heads, same with any thistles, even rudbeckia seeds.

I grow specific bushes for birds like nannyberries, highbush cranberries, cardinal candy. Wild raspberries in my ravine. If you google shrubs for feeding birds you'll find a huge list. Even apples left on trees will help feed birds.

I'll second Yorkies word of teazles.

We used to cut a couple down when dry and just stuff them in the soil.  Now we have a couple growing in our garden.  I know it'll be a pain trying to keep them in check when they self seed, but watching the goldfinches just cannot be bettered.  We sprinkle niger seeds over the teazles when it looks as though the birds have cleared them out of teazle seed.     Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Don't forget the Evening Primrose, Goldfinches love their seeds.

I agree with the others Teasel. Grew it for the goldfinch's, it can self seed everywhere, but it never stood a chance.

Yeah, but  ::) ... it's easy enough to pull up, attracts moths and apparently you can eat the roots, although we've never had the courage to try them.
