potting on and planting out.
« on: June 20, 2011, 06:25 »
I've noticed more this year that the stuff I'm putting into bigger pots has leaves down the bottom - small ones that are just coming - but these end up getting burried by compost, or soil when planting out.  Does this really matter?  One of the reasons I pot on into larger containers is, apart from giving them more room to grow larger, to give them a bit of protecton against wind when they've got a bit 'leggy', so I like to plant them a bit deeper inorder to do this as I think it strengthens them.

Will this hinder their growth or will the leaves just come up through the soil when ready?

Lately this has been the case with purple sprouting broccoli and cabbage.

these are the seed leaves, they do have a proper name but it escapes me at the moment. they are used to push the plant out of the seed and will eventually turn yellow and drop off so burying them is not a problem.

It is a good idea to always pot on/plant out PSB and cabbage deeper than they were, and well firmed in.

Seed leaves = cotyledons  something! (Someone will know how to spell it)

just make sure you don't bury the new leaves and shoots that are forming in the middle.
