Aubergine Help Needed...
« on: June 19, 2011, 19:52 »
This is the first time I have grown these and am in need of a little guidance from one of out Aubergine guru's..  :)
I have two plants growing in 10" pots on the greenhouse and they are about 30-40cm tall, now most of the sites (google search) say to nip out the tip of the growing stem which will in turn help produce more side shoot from which the fruit will come.
I have attached 2 pics of the top of both plants and both have a spiky bulb which looks like they are about to open into a flower.... my question is.... is it these that need nipping out as one of the sites sugests as they are 'embryonic fruits'.
Anyone???

It looks, to me, as if you have the start of side shoots already anyway :)
So I'd leave well alone ;)

Hope your flowers set - none of mine are yet  :(

It looks like fruit to me  :)  Most of mine are pants!  I've thrown four away already as they were just not growing. I have about four left but they are still looking sick.  I think it's not going to be my year, so congrats on yours  :)

Leave well alone just water and feed them.

For the first time ever I actually have plants and two have flowers on them.

I wouldn't dare pinch anyhting off or they might die with shock

(joke  as I have a very very poor track record with aubergines --- ask MoS  :nowink: )

I tiptoe quietly around them  ;)

Do they need bees? Or do they do it themselves?

They need bees , I tried 'helping' with a paintbrush, but it's not worked so far :(

I think it's a bit on the cold side for them, they like it above 15C day and night and we're still getting some at about 12C  inside the greenhouse

Thank you for that answer MoS  :)

I shall have to take a paintbrush next time I go to the plot.

Fortunately my plot neighbour has put up another shed, right next to my little polytunnel, so it keeps the wind off it a treat  :D :
