Do chooks lay eggs of the colour they should from the very first egg or is it a gradual thing?  the reason I ask is because we think our light sussex and Maran are both laying but both eggs are light beige and we thought the maran would lay a brown egg.

Marans do lay dark brown eggs.  How many hens do you have ?

We have 6 birds a white sussex (laying) a light sussex (probably POL)  a maran - these are the oldest birds i think, then we have an Aracana, a red sussex and a barnvelder. The barnvelder is older than the red sussex.  Can you tell how old they are by their comb? We have had 3 eggs for the last 2 days 2 broken and the white sussexs egg in tact

Light Sussex always use to lay a not quite bluish pinkish whitish colour. One of those have got to be rightish

Today one of my hens laid a lovely egg, it was a darkish brown with kind of specs on it (which were rough), it came from my Barnvelder or Maran, anyone know ?
