Webbs Wonderful & Cos Lettuce
« on: June 19, 2011, 06:03 »
I planted 2 rows of these seeds about a month ago, exactly the same way I planted my Red Salad Bowl Lettuce, and have not had a peep out of them.  Very strange indeed..  :(

Could be all sorts of things, poor seed, wrong conditions, slugs etc.

Here's how I do it, you get better germination and the process ensures you don't forget successive sowings, as well as making the packet of seed last longer.

Sprinkle a pinch of seed into a 3" pot of compost & lightly cover with a bit more compost.

When large enough to handle, (2 -3 weeks), prick out into seed trays and re-sow the pot.

After another couple of weeks or so, your tray will be ready for planting out, do this, prick out the second pot into the now empty tray and re-sow the pot. Repeat until the weather gets the better of you!

You'll never forget to successively sow lettuce again!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I can vouch for DD's method (me and half the forum I expect  :D ) and we always seem to have enough lettuce.

Just remember they won't germinate in high temperatures  ;)

Too true. The first sowings are geminated in the frost free greenhouse, at this time of year they're outside with no mollycoddling.

I keep my little pots outside in a shady place in the garden, and then sow the seed late evening

(when the weather is hot of course -- right now any time will do I reckon  )

In the summer (if it gets hot) I sow mine in the spare bedroom............it's cooler in there than outside!  :D

I had disasterous results after pricking out and planting on my lettuces - they ALL died :(

This time I have sown some more, around 5 or 6 in each 2" pot and will take out all but one to leave to grow on - then if it needs potting on again before planting out, I will pot on the whole small pot contents.

The thinnings will be eaten  ;)

What I do is mix up some of my lettuce seeds and then plant them into 3" or ^" pots like DD does but I tend to sow loads maybe 30 -50 seeds as they dont always come up. then when these are big enough they are then planted into the allotment or I take some home and these are then planted into grow bags under a clouch ( no garden at all at home so this is left on the communal lawn next to my two tomato houses) they grow well and quick in the clouchs and if I mix up the stuff in the grow bag I can get away with two planting as well.

I have started to grow all my vegs in pots like this cabbage onions etc as I do not have that much space for lots of trays. Very much like this video Laughing dog farm

I've never had a problem with transplants doing it the way I descibed, as for quantity, I find a small pinch is enough for 24 plants in a seed tray with loads keft over.

Sometimes I even count out the seeds if I just need a few of a variety -- sad I know

Blimey - I thought I was tight with one brassica seed per cell.

Hang on - I am!
