Can my girls sleep outside now?
« on: June 17, 2011, 08:01 »
Morning everyone.

My four chicks are now five and a half weeks old.  They have been spending the days out in the garden for the last 3 weeks and have gradually built up to staying out until dusk.  Finally the coop has arrived  :D and I am thinking of leaving them in it tonight instead of bringing them indoors.  They are very strong and I think all of their feathers are in except for a few stubborn ones on their very scruffy necks :)

Do you think they will be ok?

Thank you.

What is it about my kitchen that is so more appealing to the chickens than the back garden!!!   ;-)

I'm not an expert but my instinct would be to let them use the coop.  Good Luck and keep us posted  :)
How about some pics?  :D

I have some (9) about the same age who are outdoors all the time without a broody hen and 10 outdoors (these even sleep outdoors) with a broody hen who are only a week old.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Yes it's fine as long as they haven't been having a heat lamp at night indoors. If they have then turn it off for 2 or 3 nights then put them out

Thanks everyone.

Since I posted my question, today has turned out to be the coldest, wettest day we've had since they hatched!

I felt sorry for them so I brought them in about an hour ago as I was concerned that tonight probably wasn't the best choice for their first night in the coop.

Hi bantam novice, I will post some pics over the weekend when I have the time to work out how to do it ;)

And gracie the heat lamp has been off for weeks so if tomorrow is a better day then they will stay out all night.

Thanks again everyone.
