Tomato sauce carnage in the garden!
« on: June 17, 2011, 03:57 »
Last night I made a yummy pasta sauce for dinner.  Very tomato-ey and packed with vegetables.  We're going away for the weekend so I realised I won't get a chance to eat the left overs and decided to feed them to the chickens.

Well what a mess!

I didn't even know if they would like tomato sauce.  But they went mad for it - dipping their beaks in then shaking their heads and flinging it everywhere!  I had to beat a quick retreat before I got too much on my clothes, but now the garden looks like there has been a blood-bath!  ???

All the chickens are covered in bright red splatters (especially the Light Sussex) and there's a great smear of red where someone stood in the bowl and overturned it on the grass.  I hope nobody calls the SPCA or I will be in trouble.  :(

Fortunately rain is forecast so hopefully most of the evidence will wash away.

I did read in a chicken magazine that it was actually illegal to feed chickens any scraps that come via the kitchen...everyone doe it though don't they?

Lovely mental image there Lindeggs! :D

I think this depends on whether the meat of the animal is destined for the human food chain. Same for pigs, you're not allowed to feed them lovely veggie scraps any more.

If the veg is cooked in a seperate pan to the one humans use then its ok; and we all do that don't we?  ;)

In the UK, its illegal to feed livestock anything that has been in a domestic kitchen.
You cant take a carrot into the kitchen, peel it, and then take it outside for your chickens.

We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Yes I heard that at a talk at the Edible Garden Show.

Where did you read that nonsense?

This is absolutely correct. Your post came across to me anyway, as rather rude whiskywill, which I'm sure you didn't intend.

Apologies if I sounded rude but it is simply not true. The legislation exists to stop kitchen waste, whether domestic or from commercial catering or food production, being fed to animals.

There is nothing to prevent you preparing feed for whatever livestock you have, in a domestic kitchen. Just don't feed them waste.

I am just wondering (this is not a fact but just from my thoughts) whether "livestock" being fed scraps could have from the connection to livestock ie cows being fed infected meat and BSE possibly being spread in that way.
I didn't explain that very well!!

The woman at the Edible Garden Show was adamant that it applied to any food that has been in your kitchen, be it bread, veg or any thing. I just thought I was glad I didn't know when I kept chickens

It may be the law, but Ive never heard of anything so utterly stupid in my life. What is wrong with me cutting off a slice of my homemade brown bread and giving it to my chooks (if I had any ::). Its correctness gone mad. If the veg I cook are good enough for me and my family to eat, then why shouldnt any leftovers be given to my animals?
For once in my life, Im utterly speechless..and that's saying something!
