Moved as requested to 'Grow Your Own'.

I'm sure whisky_golf will respond in due course!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hard necks are a type of garlic that literally forms a hard centre stem. It's best grown in areas where you have 14 hours of daylight in summer, which means, only one growing season. Soft necks are grown in hotter climes in spring and fall where the daylight hours are shorter. I suspect most UKrs grow hardnecks, I know WG does because I know where he gets his seed garlic

You can grow either in the UK but you won't get the best results from softnecks in the UK. As for variety to grow, I don't know the answer to that one. We'll have to wait for WG to pull his head out of the smoker

Garlic doesn't like waterlogged winter conditions.

I mainly plant porcelain garlic - grows to almost 5ft tall.  Seed is available from Really Garlicky Company.

See http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?p=82967#82967

I do grow some other hardneck and softneck garlics too - I keep my own seed from varieties (unknown names) which I find to do very well in my garden.

I actually lifted about 50kg of porcelain garlic today (late, I know) & noted that some of it has started to sprout already.

Would it be a really bad idea to use shop bought garlic??
Is it more prone to rotting or disease?
