Sickly beans and peas
« on: June 12, 2011, 17:41 »
I have only had my allotment since mid-April and my French beans, runner beans and peas all look pale and sickly. French beans and peas planted 21st May, and runners only on 6th June. The ones planted at home from the same batch are much happier so I imagine it must be the lack of rain and/or the soil. Everything else in the allotment is fine. I have been mega-watering when I can but can't go every day. Any advice please?

Welcome to the forums.

It could be that the ones you've got at home are more sheltered and a bit warmer. The nights have been quite cold.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Also it could be the soil, did you manage to feed the soil before you planted them, they are quite greedy!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

I have put some horse manure in and gave them some chicken manure pellets, but they are really pale.

Our runners, french beans and BNS's all look pretty sad......it's the cold and wind.As soon as the weather warms up they'll be away.

My french beans, which I put out too early after the very warm April we had, are still yellow and not very happy looking. They have only just started to climb and that is just a few of them.

I will learn next year to not get lulled into a false sense of security from a warm week. I should have put them out about a month later than I did - which of course means I should have sowed them later!
