Looks like they're evolving to make them harder to harvest.

Nice looking beetroot. :) It obviously wanted to hang onto the ground longer though. ::) We have our second sowing in now, the first failed completely. :(

It was, but we did a tray sow where we'd normally sow direct (I didn't do it ::) so I don't know why). I think it could have been that or just the horrible cool conditions we had during May. Second sowing has been done direct as usual.

:)

That's funny-- I've just done a module sow for the first time ever, as direct sow didn't appear

I've sown two lots, both germinated and just.....sat there. Maybe this rain will help.

I had poor germination in raised beds at the plot so I grew some in a seed tray at home in a plastic greenhouse and then transplanted to fill gaps.
Agree though that the weather isn't helping first too fry now it's raing but v cold!

Cheers HH
Keep digging

Love the cork-screw beets.  ;) Ideal for windy conditions.

I've sowed three batches this year all in modules. The first have given two harvests so far with some big, tasty roots although so far not quite as sweet as usual. Lack of rain I guess.

Second and third batches are planted out and another lot of seed went in at the week-end. I have trouble keeping up with demand from all of the family.  ::)

I'm glad it's not just me with the poor germination.  I sowed some beetroot in exactly the same way as last year and It's not coming up.  I put another lot in at the weekend because I love fresh and pickled beetroot and I was trying the yellow ones also this year.  Gutted.
