Potatoes and Squashes/Pumpkins
« on: June 09, 2011, 07:37 »
I am a newbie to this allotment lark having got my plot about 3 weeks ago. Anyway, I've been busy as a bee and managed to prepare and plant brassicas and pots so far. Today I was going to plant some squash/pumpkin next to my rows of spuds. I seem to remember reading that this is a bad combination - is this true? What do people think?

I've not heard of that being a bad combination.  They are both very hungry and big plants so spacing needs to be carefully thought through I would think.  Someone else will know for sure.

I agree with Robster re space. I have just planted some squash/pumpkins next to potatoes, but they are early spuds so when they are lifted soon, there will be room for the squash to grow.

I've done the same of MOS - in the space where I lifted two potatoe plant I've put my pumpkin it will have room to spread as the row of spuds gets eaten - I have put boards up to try and contain it and get it to grow in the direction I want hopefully my plan will work!

I'm trying to be much more efficient with my space this year!

When you have finished getting a pumpkin to grow where you want it can you come round and herd all the cats into not using my lotty as a litter tray.  I reckon neither will be completely successful but good luck.
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

You don't need anything as complicated as boards to train a pumpkin. Move the runner to where you want it, then put a stick in the ground to stop it moving back.

Repeat as necessary,
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Me too DD - only I'm more brutal! When the runners are 3' or 4' long I pick them up and plonk them down where I want them. They're too heavy, by then, to spring back (obviously I'm not so brutal as to snap the stems ...)
