Mulching
« on: June 08, 2011, 20:44 »
Are there any rules regarding mulching with compost? I have a spare sack or two, and given how dry it's been (not to mention, how weedy my plot is looking...  ) I thought I might try and use it as mulch. I presume I need to keep it away from stems? And are there any crops I can't use it on - e.g. onions? carrots? parsnips?

Any thoughts much appreciated!

If you can get it around crops, pretty much anything can be mulched. I normally start with toms, sweet peppers, egplants, cukes, then onions/leeks and see if there's anything left for other crops. I noticed a group of gardeners who hilled up carrots and beetroot against pests and to retain moisture. Compost would do the same.

If t at all possible, mulch after a rainfall so there's moisture to retain. If none for the future, just mulch anyway.
