Flowering sweetpeas
« on: June 07, 2011, 22:17 »
So I've managed not to kill them  :D The "high scent" are doing their best to mask the smell from next doors pigeon loft, helped by the fact the flowers are about nose height  8)

If I pick the flowers and stuff them in a mug inside (no I don't own a vase !) will more come? How long do they last on the plant ?

Yes, the climbing ones will keep flowering because they want to make seeds. If you keep picking the flowers, they can't make seeds, so they'll keep flowering. I've had them flower into late September before I just stopped picking due to many other jobs then.

I'll get picking then.

Do they always flower at the growing tip or will they produce the entire length of the plant (poorly explained - but you know what I mean) ?

They will flower further down too. You are better picking little and often as the scent only lasts a couple of days in a vase. If you get too many, pick some for lady neighbours or at work, then you'll be everybody's friend! But definitely try to avoid those pods. Our were still sending out the odd few in October last year. :)

If I showed up to customers with bunches of flowers when I go to do a service calls, they'd call the men in white coats to take me away.  ::)

At least they make my office smell better, even if they're sitting in a Sainsburys yoghurt pot.

Also cut the pods off the plant when flowers are not picked.

I've been picking fresh flowers daily, I only planted 10 seeds !  :D The plants are now 8ft high and threatening to take over the garden, I assume I can pinch the tops out to encourage side growth ?

I cut every flower every other day, and it`s amazing how many more appear in just two days.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I have to visit the plot most days even if the veg don't need anything doing..................
just to take the dead flowers and pods off, and pick a few more for the vase.
The white ones in the mix this year have lovely long stalks..........I think I'll be a bit more selective next year and not just make do with a mix :nowink:

It has been a superb year for sweepeas, best I can ever remember.

Like MoS I have to go to cut them almost daily, and if I miss a day I have armfuls, and from only 20 plants too  :D :D :D

Im not a big fan of pretty flowers - mainly because they're so fleeting. I bought these really just to please my nose hole (appeal to my olfactory sense - if you prefer).  At the same time I planted some "incense mixed" and I think I've picked 1 pink stem  :(

If you're rolling your own next year MoS - Id certainly add a few high scent, although being white they're not much to look at.

Resist the urge to wind your sweet peas round the canes / string, use wire rings and when they reach the top of the support undo the wire and lay the stem along the ground then send it up the support again.   The longer the plant, the more flowers per stem.    Cheers,  ::)  Tony.
