Blackleg
« on: June 07, 2011, 17:29 »
After reading the posting about unhappy potato plants I dug a few out to find the tell tale signs of blackleg.

Yesterday I noticed 2 poorly spinach plants and they too had rotting stems. Can other plants get black leg? The spinach is in a raised bed quite a few feet from the potatoes and does not contain soil that has ever grown potatoes.

Any one any idea?

According to the RHS blackleg is unique to spuds so it won't be that.

Don't know what else it might be though.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

 probably guilty as charged mum. They are in a raised bed though and I have only watered at the end of sunny days. Do you think I could be doing the same to my potatoes which have yet to appear after 2 and a bit weeks?

Depends if your soil is very dry or not, whether you water or not ;)

Dig a little hole and if the soil is moist a couple of inches down..then you don't need to water.

Potatoes can take a good while to emerge.......so don't panic :D

I always get blackleg on one or two plants usually the first in the row next to the grass pathway.  Dug one up last weekend and noticed both helms were half eaten by (slugs?) about 2" down in the soil and the helms were black either side of the damage.  All was not lost though as the spuds were about golf ball size and tasty too.
