Yes Aunty, shame its American.  Actually in UK, I haven't found any smaller doses than 1,000.  When I asked the hatchery, they said that many small rearers actually don't vaccinate, but just have the Mareks done by the hatchery.

So when I asked the rearer who sold us the 12 POL's the other week, whether they'd had all their vaccinations, and she said yes, had she vaccinated herself, agains Fowl pest etc, or was it just the Mareks?

Might be an idea for any of us to make sure we ask exactly what and when they were vaccinated.  When we come to sell our little lot at POL, I will give the buyers a note of all relavant info, so they know exactly when their chickens were born, and what vaccines they've had.  The system is still open to abuse.

I'm pretty sure Rachel sold us the chooks younger than she said they were, because according to the hatchery, if they are 21 weeks old now, they should have started to lay this week.

Some people do say they are older than they are to sell them quicker.  The hens I buy have been vaccinated against:

Mareks Disease
Salmonella
Coccidiosis
Infectious Bursal Disease
Infectious Bronchitis
Newcastle Disease
Turkey Rhino - Tracheitis
Avian Encephalomyelitis

Importaint if you are putting them eventually into larger flocks but for my two back garden hens rather OTT I guess

So did the people you got your girls from vaccinate them Aunty?  or did your vet do it?

The vets bill for 300 would be enormous!!!!!

There is a specific schedule for vaccination grannie.  Merek's is done at day old and other things at different ages right up to about 15 weeks. I get mine at POL = 17 weeks so vaccination is complete by then.

We lost a chick last night.  got trampled on by the heaving mass!  I'm sure they haven't stopped running around since we got them!

Another one was very weak, Brian thought it was dead, but it isn't, so I brought it indoors and an article I found in Smallholder said to give it a little warm water with some molasses in, and the only thing I've got is dark brown sugar, so dissolved a little in some warm water and I've got some droppers here that I've never used, so fed her some.  Little bits about hourly.  I made a broody box for out out of an empty photocopier paper box, a lamp holder from Brian's bedside lamp and a pygmy bulb I painted with red glass paint!  She has some chick crumb in with her too, but hasn't touched it yet.  She does keep chirping though, and loves the water, so fingers crossed!

Here's the box!  Not the best picture, but it gives you an idea.  The other half of hte lid goes over if it gets too cool and I can move it back and forwards for more air!

One Week On!

Well, here they are (at least some of them!) after 1 week.  according to the paperwork I got from the hatchery, after 1 week they should weigh between 60 and 68 gms, and we should feed them ad lib.  Well, one week later, the ones I weighed are now between 70 and 85 gms!!!!

Do you think they should go on a diet????? lol

Put half of them in the converted greenhouse today, so they have more room.  We've actually lost 5 of them now, crushed by so many others jumping on top of them.  Even though there are no corners in their shed, they just pile on top of each other, and its not as if the shed isn't warm enough either!  But we still have 301 as the hatchery gave us 2% extra in case of fatalities.  I think they were the weakest ones though.

I've started a blog about the chooks as I don't feel confident enough to start a website, and when its ready, John said I can put it on my signature.  It may help to sell the chicks when they get to POL! if there is anyone near enough to be interested!

Of course, a piccy or 2 would help!
