Chicken pics and an over-worried mum question...
« on: June 04, 2011, 21:03 »
Hello again!  You are all going to be fed up with me soon   But I took some pictures today in the sun of the girls so thought I would share.

I'm also a little worried about Ruby as she got out today and we caught her fine, but she seemed a bit on the skinny side and her colouring round her head is not as red as the others.  She seems to be eating and acting just like the others fine so not sure if i'm worrying about nothing!  Anyway, heres some pics...

This is Ruby, the one i'm worried about...

Lilith

Delia

Thoughts welcome!

Lovely pics Nicki  :)
I am not an expert but for what it's worth I think that if you have wormed and frontlined your hens and Ruby is eating, drinking and acting like the others I would just watch her over the next couple of days.  She may just be a slower developer than the others.  You have a lovely flock there.
It is a good idea to identify a local chicken-friendly vet.  Not all of them are and some even refuse to treat chickens.  If you have a contact ready then you can get in touch if you need to.
Good luck and keep us posted

How old is Ruby? She might just come into lay a bit later than the others.
Is she bottom of the pecking order? If so is she getting her fair share of grub?
She might just be naturally skinny though - a lot of the laying birds are - my hybrids are less that half the weight of my RIR who has a very plump breast and thighs... she'd make a great table bird but then she lays well too (fortunately for her!)

my first instinct, as both a back yard chicken keeper, and as a vet, would be to worm your chucks with a good proven wormer like flubenvet.  herbal/ homeopathic/ natural just dont cut the mustard im afraid.

They are all supposed to be the same age (15weeks) if anything ruby and Lilith should be a week older. I haven't wormed them so will get some flubavent this week and do that. We have some frontline spot on for our dog can I put a drop of that on each of them? Thanks for all the advice :-) much appreciated. Hopefully I'm worrying about nothing!! But as I do with any new animal we get I worry lots till i know them!

I think this is the question all us new chicken keepers ask at one time.Mine were the same so I wormed them and we use frontline for kittens on them. no problems yet.
It can take up to 20weeks for a hybrid to lay even longer breeds

Nicki85, just as Izzy says it can take quite a while for hens to come into lay - 20 weeks is an average and some of my pure breeds took as much as 28 weeks to come into lay. Just worm them as a precaution and keep an eye on her - if she's active, eating and drinking like the rest I wouldn't worry too much.

Beautiful photos!
