poor strawberries
« on: June 04, 2011, 08:30 »
My first strawberry harvest was good but the second batch the berries have been really small and well a bit rubbish really.

Perhaps it's the drought but the plants are watered regularly and look healthy and seem productive.

The plants were fed and manured back in March - should I be feeding them more often?

Any ideas to improve the crop?

Thanks in advance

Are these everbearing strawberries?

Normally you'd feed the plants after harvest so the berries don't get watery. But mostly, you want a good fall feeding so they're ready for spring. No need to keep feeding them throughout the growing season.

But for good production all round, you must water them deeply and regularly, otherwise they're like kids with tantrums and just won't produce. Of all fruits, strawberries are the most demanding with their needs.

we were down the plot today and a rather sleepy (or ill?) mouse appeared from under the fabric we're growing the strawberries through - explains the wee nibbles despite out bird netting!

Our strawberries have been good on the whole but not many of them, I think with the lack of regular rain this year.

Some of the smaller plants have given up completely and will need replacing.

An autumn feed as has been suggested and some new replacements and then a general mulch for next year to keep the moisture in.
