Thank you for being so helpful Joyfull.  The Tamworth one haven't got any and the Staffford and Newcastle ones are a long way from me really. I've left a message for 'Highfield Happy Hens' at Etwall to get back to me which is my last chance I think.

So sorry it hasn't been a good experience for you, finding a chick in the egg is heartbreaking.  Don't let it put you off, good luck with your search :D

they should be ok, but try and make sure you have a back up plan such as a heat lamp - electric hen etc (wish I lived closer - you could borrow my electric hen or even have had a couple of very young chicks). Get her three chicks, then carefully slide them underneath her - she may try to peck you or them but I find a gentle tap on her beak soon stops that. Make sure she is closed up in the dark and by tomorrow morning she should be a proud happy mum with some chicks  :).
You may want to keep her enclosed in a smallish space for another day or so so place crumb and chicks drinker close by,
Good luck and fingers crossed (one of my broodies has adopted 9 chicks that are a few days younger than her 4 without any problems and because these are a couple of days younger she divides her time from being inside and out) so it can work well  :D

That is my worry as I don't have any form of backup.  She has been out in the garden all morning, I ended up shutting her out of the broody coop completely as she just kept going back in.  I can't put her back in with my other hen(s) (I have 3 altogether but another one has gone broody and taken to the shed!) yet as the remaining unbroody one keeps trying to bully her, she's a bossy one normally, but they have been having a chat through the fence to try and reintroduce them and she is now having a sleep in my flower bed.  Maybe I should leave it, I'm 99% sure she would accept the chicks as she is very gentle but what if she doesn't....

so was she ok when you put them under her?
I love Cuckoo Marans - my best broody Brenda Lee is one (she is the one with the 9 adopted chicks along with the 4 she has hatched herself  :D), and she lays dark brown eggs when not broody  :)
