Broad beans
« on: May 31, 2011, 17:27 »
I have been picking broad beans for several weeks now, I noticed today that many of my broad beans have been fully opened, all the beans removed, the shell of the bean removed and then eaten, is it rats?

mine are gradualy taken over by blackfly and ants, the biggest pod contains only small flat beans of the size of a pea.

Just found out that another guy on the allotments has the same problem, if you could see the way these beans are nibbled, all the bean outer is left on the soil

Either pigeons, jackdaws or pheasants. On my allotment broad beans need to have a net or other barrier round them to stop them being eaten.

Attacks are usually a couple of days before you were going to pick them.

Pheasants eh Salmo?

Hmmm...

The coven of pheasants we have had better watch out now - thanks for the warning, my broad beans are at beak-height...

Is there a recipe for pheasant stuffed with broad bean?  ;)
