what next to Try and grow.....
« on: May 29, 2011, 19:42 »
Hi again, I have 3 tomato plants, 1 pepper plant, about 30 spring onions, about 15 icebergs, sweet peas, runner beans, as a Newbie in growing veg my question is what else could I try to grow as I have just made 2 planters approx 3x1x1 ft (x2) out off decking off cuts...no herbs to be honest i would not use them.

I would grow what you like to eat, but also what is expensive in the shops.  Runner Beans are probably the best bang-for-buck.

My other criteria would be that things, picked fresh, taste better than the shops.  Sweetcorn is a good example of that.

And lastly (although similar) things where you can choose a variety that has more taste than the ones in the shops.  Supermarket Tomatoes tend to have thicker skins, so they don't get damaged on the supermarket shelves.  Thin skinned / lower yielding etc. varieties with better flavour are on my list of things-I-prefer-to-grow :)
