Writing on eggs.
« on: May 29, 2011, 19:35 »
Hello all, silly question but what should i use to write on my eggs to record the date?  I'm going to start selling my surplus around the neighbor's etc and want a laid on date to cover myself.  Cheers folks.

Just use a lead pencil. The lead in pencils now-a-days do not contain lead. :D

... also pencil lead doesn't soak into the shell.  Any pens with water or especially solvent-based inks run the risk of soaking through the porous shell and contaminating the egg.  Pencil is best.

I was thinking of doing a similar thing myself, do you need to get any kind of approvals to be able to sell the eggs?
I dog, 1 cat, 1 horse, 1 Light Sussex, 2 Speckledys, 2 Cuckoo Maran:)

Not if you are just selling them to friends or from your house, but its another matter if you want to start selling at markets or car boot sales.

You should put a best before date on the eggs, or a notice at least saying use before 3 weeks.  I don't actually do that as most of my customers have to wait until I go and see if there are any more eggs under the chickens!

We got a rubber date stamp from one of those pound shops, all we do is, as we print the date, we roll the stamp around to follow the curve of the egg, (nice and neat).

No more un-readable scribbles!  ::)
