Wholesale Suppliers
« on: May 28, 2011, 20:05 »
Hi Everyone,
I have just been asked by the committee of our allotment society to take over the ordering of the supplies to our shop from someone who is retiring from the position. We are currently ordering supplies from Kings, but I have been asked to look at cutting the costs of the order & delivery etc.

Can anyone suggest a wholesaler or two that would be willing to do business with us.

Thanks
Roger.

If you're members of NSALG then you get discounted seeds via Kings for your lotty site, so bear that in mind when comparing

Moles are good!  We are with Kings but we regularly get stuff from Moles as well

We use Fothergills via Codnor, I think
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Suttons run a scheme for Hort Socs etc. Individual orders forwarded in bulk by the secretary. Individual deliveries. 10 % off non-seeds. Discount on seeds according to the size of the whole bulk order. £1,000 gets about 50% off.

I really do think you should have a long hard look at Moles Seeds - as already mentioned.

Let's take an example of a popular seed - Autumn King 2 Carrots.

Suttons - 4,400 seed for £5.35

Moles - 40,000 - 45,000 seed for £4.80

That's 10 times the amount for less cost, even with a 50% discount that's 5 times as many for less cost - and the more you buy the cheaper it gets. You may even be able to negociate a discount for bulk from Moles.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grow Autumn King 2 and next year I intend to buy 10g of 'Graded' Autumn King 2 from Moles

What does Graded actually mean? And also how many seeds will 10g graded give me. Yesterday I sowed two packets of AK2 which gave me about 4,000 seeds.

Mrs FB loves her Carrots and its the one veg she will always eat, so I sowed 5 x 25ft rows under Enviromesh for Autumn and Winter harvest.

Thought I'd replied to this! If you look at the "Technical Information" on Moles site, it'll tell you the number of seed to a gram, in this case 800 - 900.  Taking the bottom figure, that's 8,000 seed, or twice as many as the two packets you sowed put together.

Not sure about their definition of "Graded" though.

John, that really is a good site.  Thanks.

John, that really is a good site.  Thanks.

I got together with the neighbours and we've a huge order on the way - about 600Kg and delivery is about £36. He's geared up for serious growers like allotment holders. The only thing is being prepared to spend in one go. We used to pop down and pick up a bag of this and that most weeks, doing it in one go is a bit of a wallet thinner!

Incidentally, I realised the delivery charge is less than it would cost for me to pick it up in the car from our 'local' DIY shed - would be at least 10 journeys at £6.60 each for the fuel alone. Can't speak highly enough of Taylors.
