Growing sweetcorn in containers
« on: May 27, 2011, 16:22 »
So I've read I can plant my sweetcorn seedlings in a pot of around 18 inches deep.  I've run out of allotment space now so they're going to have to go in a pot outside my house somehow!  Just wondering how far apart I need to plant them and how many would fit in a dustbin that big?  Can I plant all 9 of my plants in the one bin?!

Thanks in advance! :)

You would need about a 1m2 block to plant 9 sweetcorn (and that would be pushing it!)

If you do have to split them between two containers make sure they are placed next to each other for pollination purposes.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Bear in mind that they are very heavy feeders when grown in the veg plot!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I'm currently growing 5 to a 20L container and they're very happy. Just keep them well fed and watered and they should do OK.

Last year on the allotment site there were several sweetcorn crops with the plants spaced around six inches apart and they ended up producing no usable cobs.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

last year I grew 7 sweetcorn in a round 20inch diameter container, which is approx. 30in deep. I kept them well watered but must admit I did not feed them with anything. Despite this they grew really well, some were on the small side, especially those that had 3 per plant but others were a really good juicy size. Consequently I have planted this years batch in the same container and I will feed them this time and hope for even better results!!

Hope this helps

Great thanks guys!  Looks like I've got nothing to lose then!  Maybe not all 9 in the same pot though! :)
